Victorious during the Civil War, William Tecumseh Sherman was appointed General of the Army by Ulysses S. Grant in 1869, and he served as the U.S. Army's highest ranking officer until 1883. March to a great collecting victory, with this Sherman signed check. This antique Riggs & Co. check is dated 2/2/1887, four years before Sherman's death in 1891. Given its considerable age, this crisp, clean check is a very pleasing example, showing moderate wear at the bottom left corner. Also noted are a light vertical fold at center, and cancellation cuts typical of the period. All graphics remain distinct, and remarkably, Sherman's century and a half old signature registers an ("8-9") degree of potency. Auction LOA from JSA.
